The Blue Cross & Blue Shield Association member health plans offer health insurance throughout the United States (as well as some parts of Canada and Puerto Rico).
Currently Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) member plans, in aggregate are the largest health insurance provider in nation, insuring nearly 90 million individuals and families.
There are currently 38 Blue Cross member plans that serve various geographies. This number was once much higher but over the past 5 to 10 years there has been some consolidation among some member health plans, most notably acquisitions and/or mergers by Anthem and later Wellpoint.
